He appeared to signal his intention to quit in a tweet to show boss Simon Cowell, who may also leave the panel.
Funnyman David has clashed with Simon throughout the series with the music mogul saying that he had often “overstepped the mark”.
And just hours after the grand final on Saturday night David, 42, tweeted Simon, 54: “Shame I will never see you again. Best of luck with everything.”
David kept an unusually low profile at the wrap party and slipped out early.
In contrast, Amanda Holden, 43, partied until gone 4am.
David’s goodbye tweet comes days after Cowell admitted that he is planning to shake up the show.
The source said: “Simon knew at the end of the last series that he wanted David, Amanda and Alesha Dixon back again.
“He got them all to agree after the final.
“But this year he’s not given any of them any assurances over their future.
“He really wants to take stock of what’s happened this series and make the necessary changes.”
