The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge met the King and Queen of Belgium in Liege this morning ahead of a service to mark the 100th anniversary of the First World War. The Cambridges posed for the press outside the city's Saint Laurent Abbey with Queen Mathilde and King Philippe of Belgium. Liege, an industrial hub in the east of the neutral country, was the Germans' first obstacle after the war broke out in August 1914. After a service in Liege, the focus will turn to Mons on the French border, scene of a do-or-die rearguard action by the first British troops committed to the war as London and Paris scrambled to prevent a German breakthrough in late August. The Cambridges, along with Prince Harry and Prime Minister David Cameron will lead the tributes in Mons where the first British soldier died.
