Nigella, 54, had hopes of forging a new TV career Stateside following her bitter divorce from millionaire Charles Saatchi, 70.
But she was stopped from boarding a flight from Heathrow to Los Angeles at the weekend because of her court confession that she had taken cocaine.
It is a massive blow for the Domestic Goddess who was hoping to escape her problems in the UK by “doing a Gordon Ramsay” and making it big on US telly.
Hollywood sources claim American TV chiefs could now use the shock ban as an excuse to axe her ailing US series The Taste.
She has appeared as a judge on the talent show but a third season has yet to be confirmed.
One source said: “This has come at the worst possible time for Nigella.
"It could spell the final straw for The Taste and cut off an escape route to the States.”
Nigella was forced to confess under oath in court last year that she had snorted cocaine seven times and smoked cannabis.
It came as two former housekeepers stood trial for stealing from her and her husband.“She didn’t seem to say much, but she did not look happy”A fellow traveller
Although British police did not act over her drug confession, the US authorities take a tougher stance on travellers who admit taking drugs.
Nigella arrived alone at Heathrow’s Terminal Five on Sunday morning to fly to LA.
It is believed she checked in and passed security before being given the bombshell news that she could not board her plane.
A fellow traveller said: “She didn’t seem to say much, but she did not look happy.
"She could not get on the flight so she had to turn around.”
A spokeswoman for the US Embassy said: “Ms Lawson has been invited to come to the embassy and apply for a visa for travel to the US.
“We understand she has professional requirements for US travel and these matters are generally handled routinely and expeditiously, so stand by.”
