The crook, Yi Fu, 35, was trying to rob a flat in an
apartment block when he was disturbed by residents.
Arming themselves with knives and broomsticks, they chased the overweight thief – who weighs 19 stone – back into the building.
Yet the large burglar seemed to have given them the slip as he clambered into an out of service lift shaft.
But when he tried to get out he became wedged and unable to move an inch.
The residents thought he had made his escape and went back to bed in their homes in the Chengdu city in Sichuan province, China.

"No-one could hear his cries echoing in the night air and down the elevator shaft.
"It was only at dawn as resident Shoo Pei, 49, was on her way to work that she heard the plaintive cries coming from above and called firemen and police.
Firefighters spent another houra freeing him, only to deliver him into the waiting arms of the law who took him into custody.
"He will have to go on a diet if he wants to continue in this line of work," added the police spokesman
