Police in Moncton, New Brunswick, are searching for 24-year-old Justin Bourque who is considered "armed and dangerous" after allegedly killing three officers and wounding two more in eastern Canada.
Bourque is reportedly wearing camoufl
age and began firing at police at 7.30pm on Wednesday.
He is also said to be armed with two assault rifles, pistols, a knife and a crossbow.
Mr Theriault was in tears after revealing he personally knew the officers who had been shot.
Danny Leblanc said he saw the shooter on Wednesday evening standing in the middle of the road pointing his guns at police cars.
"It's devastating," he said. "I don't know if he was on a hunt for them, or what."
Another witness has described seeing the alleged gunman as she opened a window at her home.
Joan MacAlpine-Stiles told CBC.ca: "I said, 'Oh my God, there he is with camouflage and the headband and a gun, and it looked like a bow he had with him, and I mean he was just through our backyard'."
Residents have been warned not to use social media to reveal information about police operations.
Moncton Mayor George LeBlanc has urged residents to heed the police warnings.
"The police and other emergency personnel are working under extremely difficult conditions and need our complete cooperation," he said.
"Stay home, stay safe. If you cannot get home, seek out a friend or family and remain there until you are advised otherwise."
In a haunting Facebook message posted hours before his deadly shootout, Bourque uploaded lyrics from a song by American thrash metal band Megadeth.
The disturbing lyrics from the song Hook in Mouth include: "A little man with a big eraser, changing history."
Other verses include "Make a person disappear, and no one will ever miss you" and "Replacing rights with wrongs, the files and records in the schools".
