But it appears that a new asset-baring trend has emerged – ditching the bra and cutting out the middle of your frock.
At last night's BET Awards in Los Angeles, some of music and film's biggest stars took to the red carpet to flaunt their style, but some starlets showed off more than others.
You may remember Tatyana Ali from her role as Ashley alongside Will Smith in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air – but Miss Ali, ages 35, is now all grown up, and apparently a huge fan of gowns that border on obscene.
The singer and actress chose to go down the vintage Jodie Marsh route of strapping in her boobs with two measly stretches of hot pink fabric, which were holding on to dear life to a fragile goldchain around her neck.
The ampleness of Tatyana's bust meant that the top half of her gown was straining beyond belief, causing her assets to attempt an escape out of either side of her dress.
But it wasn't just Tatyana who was guilty of being a bit too liberal with the cleavage exposure.
Singer Ashanti went for angelic white in a bridal themed gown with pretty lace sleeves and a cascading train that followed her down the red carpet.
However, we highly doubt that this dress would be suitable for a church affair, what with the amount of skin on show from the collarbone down.
A teardrop keyhole let the Always On Time singer's bosom roam free, pretty much cancelling out the innocence that came with her colour choice.
Equally, socialite and sex tape queen Paris Hilton had nobody fooled with her virginal colour palette.
The heiress covered up for the most part in a long-sleeved shimmering gown that accentuated her statuesque frame, but also chose to join the gapboob brigade with massive mesh slashes across her décolletage and waist.
The boobyliciousness didn't stop on the red carpet, though.
As always, Nicki Minaj was on hand to bring some jaw-dropping curves to the stage as she performed new single Pills 'n' Potions wearing little more than a chain mail bib.
With gold links dripping over her chest, the Super Bass singer showed off the extent of her near-nudity when she straddled a motorbike with a male dancer.
With sideboob galore on show, Miss Minaj also flashed plenty of booty as her ruffled skirt barely covered her backside.
We hope there was undies in the goodie bags for all these undergarment-challenged divas.
The big winners at the BET Awards were Beyoncé and Pharrell Williams, who won best female and best male R'n'B/pop artist respectively. Queen Bey also took home the best collaboration award with hubby Jay Z for Drunk In Love, while Pharrell got the best video gong for Happy.
Nicki Minaj bagged the award for best hip-hop female, while Drake won the male equivalent.
