The gate is hanging off its hinges, the garden fence has collapsed, and the contents of the conservatory are now missing, presumed lost to the muddy swamp that still covers half of Somerset.
Even getting across his threshold is a feat for Mark Kirby, since the mountain of filthy debris piled up in the hall means that the front door will no longer open.
‘I’m afraid,’ he declares, ‘that for the time being we’ve got to climb through what used to be the window.’
It was a strange homecoming yesterday for 44-year-old Mark, one of the long-suffering residents of the flood-ravaged village of Moorland. Exactly four weeks ago, shortly after 2am on Friday, February 7, his family had been woken by sirens and shouts warning that defences protecting the rural hamlet where they live had failed.
