Large parts of East 26th Street collapsed into the sinkhole in the US state of Maryland on Wednesday afternoon.
Gas supplies to the area and have been cut off and some residents have been evacuated from their homes as a precaution.
The freak event is likely to have been caused by heavy rain which pounded the area for several days.
One eyewitness managed to capture the moment a parked car slide into the mammoth crater on video.
