Last of the headhunters: Amazing images document the historic warriors whose fierce tribal existence will soon disappear forever

Nagaland

Photographer Jean-Christian Cottu captured these stunning images of the Konyak people who live in the remote Mon district of Nagaland, north east India. He travelled to the area with Adrian McGloin in an attempt to document the historic faces of the former headhunters before their cultural existence disappears with their tribe's demise. The elderly men and women lived through a time when tribal warfare still resolved territorial conflicts and their backs, torsos and facial tattoos bear witness to that mortal combat and customary headhunting. The former warriors are known for their fierce headhunting history and they are distinguished by their facial tattoos and large pierced ears, often filled with jewellery made of animal horns.
